Nandigram is again back to the same path of violence after the clash between the members of Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) and CPI-M men, which took an ugly turn on Sunday at Chowrangee Bazaar injuring several BUPC supporters.

Again on Monday armed CPI-M cadres fired bullets and injured 15 at a BUPC rally protesting against the attack on BUPC supporters by the CPI (M) cadres at Satengabari on Sunday.

Some BUPC supporters demonstrated against police inaction against CPI-M cadres who were involved in the clashes at Chowrangee Bazaar.

There are reports of sporadic clashes between the two groups in the trouble porn region of Nandigram, ahead of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s visit to Nandigram on Tuesday to distribute land pattas to the landless farmers.

Rakesh Gupta, Inspector General (Western Range) divulged that violence continues to erupt in Nandigram while claiming, “But the situation is under control,” he briefed that police are taking adequate security measures to quash the violence.

There is resentment among the people regarding the survey done to identify the land and the farmers who will be given lands. It is alleged that the chunk of the farmers who are to be given lands are CPM supporters, also that the list has been prepared with the help of local CPM leaders with an eye at Panchayat Poll as presently CPM governs the Panchayat Samiti in Nandigram.

The BUPC raised questions both on the recent survey as well as the process of selecting recipients and submitted a written complaint to the District Magistrate.

The Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Benerjee said that the CM’s visit is an agenda to woo the voters before the poll and her party will take out silent processions on March 14 demanding justice for the victims of the “mass killing” in Nandigram last year on the day.

Last year on March 14, on the order of the Left Front government thousands of police thronged to suppress the violence of supporters of BUPC protesting against the SEZ proposal to be set up in Nandigram with the help of Salim Group of Indonesia killing at least 14 people.
