Jammu, Jan 11 (ANI): Farmers in Jammu expressed their joy over the recent spell of rain in the region which is expected to help increase crops.
Farmers were a happier lot on Tuesday, as most of them are dependent on good rainfall to reap a rich yield.
"About 10 to 15 days ago, we felt as if our crops would get damaged, since there was no rain. But with God's grace, there was rain, not as much, but it seems that the wheat crop would be good this time, if there are timely showers," said Kasturi Singh, a farmer.
Only about 45 percent of the farming area had been cultivated this season, but with the recent showers, the situation has turned in their favour.
"Until now the rain fed areas, only 40 percent sowing had been done and wheat, which is a major crop and the farmers had sowed seeds in all the irrigated areas, but the unirrigated areas which is about 75 percent in our region had nothing but around 40 percent area under sowing and the situation was not too good. Due to this rainfall, at least this problem would be solved because there is still time for sowing and the farmers were waiting for this," said Ajay Khajuria, Director of Agriculture, Jammu.
According to media reports, the state government has also planned to provide compensation to farmers, whose crops were damaged during any natural calamity. In addition, the authorities are mulling over introducing schemes, which would upgrade the agricultural sector. (ANI)
