London, Jan 9 (ANI): A man in Britain aims to make his bike, the Jet Reaction, the first jet-powered bike to beat the motorcycle land speed record.
Even the long, bullet-like Ack Attack Streamliner - the current record holder, which hit 376 mph in 2010, is powered by two Suzuki bike engines.
Jet engines are just too heavy, and too dangerous for most riders.
Richard Brown - who narrowly missed beating the record in 1999 on a custom rocket bike - hopes Jet Reaction can hit 450mph to claim the record.
The bike will begin testing in January, the Daily Mail reported.
The Jet Reaction 'bike' is a customised jet engine on two wheels, which could hit speeds of 450mph in its first tests this year.
Brown has created a jet engine from scratch - a 930 kilowatt helicopter engine retooled to create thrust, with an afterburner spraying fuel into the exhaust to generate even more thrust.
It's common for cars and boats to attempt speed records using huge jet engines.
But every motorbike that has attempted to crack the land speed record so far has used a conventional engine. Jet engines are just far too heavy to fit into a two-wheeled frame.
So far, all record-breaking motorcycles have used conventional engines that drive the rear wheel. Brown hopes his new design will shake things up.
He hopes to carry out trials in the UK in March next year, and attempt the record in 2013. (ANI)
