Rahul Gandhi assails Mayawati and BJP

Gorakhpur , Sat, 07 Jan 2012 ANI

Gorakhpur, Jan 7 (ANI): Congress General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi assailed the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on issues of corruption.

He targeted them while campaigning for his party ahead of assembly elections in Gorakhpur District of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.

"Mayawati has made a magical elephant in the Lucknow, it consumes funds meant for the poor. It gobbles up your money. Three to four persons manage this elephant. Earlier, there was also another mahout named Mr. Kushwaha who used to pilfer your money. The CBI is chasing him now. But Lal Krishna Advani and other leaders of BJP, inducted him to their party," said Rahul Gandhi.

Both BJP and Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have been embroiled in a controversy relating to the tainted politician Babu Singh Kushwaha, the sacked Health and Family Welfare Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Soon after his expulsion from the BSP, he found refuge in the BJP on Tuesday after the party roped him in to reap electoral benefits.

Barely a day later, the CBI, raided Kushwaha's residences for his alleged involvement in swindling funds allocated to the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in the state.

Slamming Mayawati, Gandhi said her exercise of sacking several ministers from her party was a gimmick to clear her image before the polls.

"Mayawati has been ruling the state for the last five years and now, when only one month is left for the elections, she is sacking her corrupt ministers. She is sacking one minister or the other, every day. She never removed anyone in the last five years. She, along with her ministers was busy misusing the funds in the last five years for self-gains," added Gandhi.

He also came down heavily on the UP chief minister over her alleged misuse of central government's welfare funds for personal gains.

Ever since the Election Commission of India announced the polls schedule, the BSP supremo Mayawati has issued marching orders to over a dozen ministers accused of corruption and nepotism. (ANI)
