2G scam: Swamy submits documents against Chidambaram

New Delhi, Sat, 07 Jan 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Jan 7 (ANI): Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy submitted documents seeking prosecution of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram in the 2G spectrum scam case before a Delhi court on Saturday.

The court later listed Swamy's application for arguments on January 21.

Swamy later said the court had accepted his documents and had permitted him to lead further arguments in the case on January 21.

"The honorable judge saw that the documents are genuine because I submitted certified copies of the same. The court after hearing my evidence, seeing my documents, accepting my documents he said evidence on this matter is concluded and on 21st January he will permit me to lead arguments as to why Mr. Chidambaram should be made a co-accused in this case," said Swamy.

"So, in a sense there is one step forward today and the final step is on the 21st, I am completely confident that on the basis of this evidence Mr Chidambaram will be a co-accused along with Mr A Raja (former Telecom Minister) after the 21st," he added.

Chidambaram has been at the center of political storm ever since certain reports revealed his alleged role in "deciding" the prices of 2G-spectrum during his earlier tenure as the Finance Minister, thus embroiling him in the telecom scam.

His name cropped up in a recent letter of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee addressed to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, in which Mukherjee blamed his predecessor for not sticking to the established procedures in auctioning of the 2G spectrum.

The letter stated that sufficient steps were not taken by Chidambaram to prevent the colossal scam from occurring in the first place, considering he could have "stuck to the stand" of auctioning of the precious spectrum instead of giving it at throwaway prices.

Swamy had earlier asked the court to summon two senior government officials as witnesses in the case, but the court has stated this is no longer necessary as the documents furnished had been certified by the Prime Minister's Office, the Finance Ministry and the Central Bureau of Investigation.

"I had asked for summoning of two witnesses earlier, the court recorded my statement that in view of the fact that I have produced certified copies, I need not call these two witnesses to depose on the genuineness of my documents," added Swamy.

The telecom scam, one of India's biggest graft cases ever, may have cost 39.57 billion dollars in revenue to the public exchequer as per the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

Raja was sacked last November and later arrested after being charged with giving away telecom licenses in 2008 at meager prices. (ANI)
