Melbourne, Jan 1(ANI): Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has said India has no chance of making a comeback in the Sydney Test and clinch its first series win on Australian soil.
"Yes, I think so. I will be happy to be proven wrong but I don't see that happening. In both the innings [in Melbourne] we failed to cross the 300-run mark ... In England, we managed to reach 300 only once despite our batsmen having 30,000, 40,000 runs behind them. The alarm bells are ringing very loudly," The Age quoted him, as saying.
Gavaskar also questioned whether Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was performing his role up to the mark.
"Captains need help because they are under pressure every time. They need help from the vice-captain and I don't think Dhoni is getting that help," [I feel] everybody is in their own cocoon [in the Indian team] and that's where Dhoni needs to have more interaction," Gavaskar said.
His statement came after Dhoni's tactics of placing five fielders on the boundary for Australian players James Pattinson and Ben Hilfenhaus during the Melbourne Test came under fire as the pair managed to put up a 43 run stand.
Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram had earlier criticised Dhoni's strategy for the Melbourne Test.
"Even after the dismal England tour, I said Dhoni is a good captain and is learning. At the MCG, he was mum on the field with very few words of encouragement to the bowlers," Akram said.
"I did not understand Dhoni's plans. When you are getting bounce and movement from an uneven deck, why do you have a deep point and not a third man? You will be hit anyway if you are bowling poorly," he added. (ANI)
