Amritsar, Dec 31 (ANI): Social activist, Hawa Singh Tomar, Secretary General, Akhil Bharati Human Rights Organization, has alleged that political parties in the state are supplying drugs to the youth to lure them to vote for their candidates.
"As we all know that Amritsar is a border area and a drug affected area. And during elections drugs are misused to a great extent, most of the political parties also misuse it. I would like to appeal to the Election Commission to act in a more strict manner to ensure that drugs are not used during these elections," said Tomar.
A drug addict, Bunty Singh informed that during elections several political parties lure the voters by providing them free drugs.
"We used to consume drugs with our own money but now we have got addicted to it and during elections we get it easily and free of cost also. We easily get capsules, heroin and cocaine," said Singh.
Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner, S Y Quraishi who was in the state to monitor the pre-poll preparations addressed the grievances of various political parties who raised concern over the rise in drug abuse in the state.
The Election Commission is keeping a close watch on the political parties so that they do not indulge in nefarious activities and violate the set rules and guidelines.
Polls in Punjab would be conducted on 30th January 2012 in single phase. (ANI)
