New Delhi, Dec 30 (ANI): Hitting out at the Central Government for not being able to pass the Lokpal Bill in Rajya Sabha, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari on Friday accused the Congress of having made a mockery of the Indian democracy.
"In the history of parliamentarian democracy, yesterday was an unfortunate day. UPA and Congress party made a mockery of democracy as well as Lokpal," Gadkari told the media here.
"The BJP had already put forward the demand of a strong Lokpal in this country. But instead of giving a strong Lokpal, the government did not show any signs of sincerity over the issue. The manner in which the government presents the Bill which violated the Constitutional rights of State governments, it clearly proves that the government does not want to bring a strong Lokpal," he added.
Gadkari further stated that the inappropriate policies have tarnished the image of the democratic system of the country.
"The government had to accept the defeat as they failed to grant a constitutional status to Ombudsman Bill. In the Rajya Sabha in the presence of Prime Minister, when the voting should have taken place, according to a planned strategy, there was a violation of the principles of democracy. Yesterday, the voting didn't take place in the presence of Prime Minster and the way the Rajya Sabha was adjourned, it is like insulting for our democracy," he said.
He also pointed out that Prime Minster Manmohan Singh should take the moral responsibility for the debacle and submits his resignation.
"The UPA-led government has no right to stay in power. In both the houses, the government has faced failure and on moral grounds, both the government and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should lay down their papers," he said.
Asserting that the Congress is embroiled in corruptive practices, Gadkari said: "We have not taken a U-turn. We were saying it earlier also and in the standing committee that the amendments presented by us were in the favour of the Lokpal and we always wanted a strong Lokpal. Congress Party has changed the Lokpal Bill . They are embroiled in corruption and are afraid that if a strong Lokpal is brought then they might face problems."
The Lokpal Bill failed to get Parliament's nod when Rajya Sabha was on Thursday night adjourned sine die abruptly amidst high drama and the Opposition accusing the government of running away from a vote because it was in a minority.
The anti-graft legislation for which social activist Anna Hazare and his team have fomented a successful mass movement may now be taken up in the budget session of parliament, probably in March. (ANI)
