Melbourne, Wed, 28 Dec 2011 ANI

Melbourne, Dec 28 (ANI): The Boxing Day Test is poised for a razor edge finish after Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey today salvaged an Australian innings that was on the brink of collapse and led their team's fight back against India on day three.

On an extraordinary, 15 wickets fell for 247 runs with India first collapsing as swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus validated his return to the team with career best figures of 5/75, then the Australians followed with a collapse of their own before Ponting and Hussey combined to help return the match to even terms.

Australia has so far made 8/179, having an overall lead of 230 runs, The Age reports.

Hilfenhaus' call back to the Australian Test team was complete when he skittled the Indian batting and helped deliver Australia a vital 51 run first innings lead.

But that was only the first act in an absorbing day's play. Within moments of the Australians confidently beginning its second innings they were once more in peril, sinking to 4/27.

In the event Ponting and Hussey held together for a pugnacious 115 run partnership to ensure that Australia would not be swept aside and would remain fiercely in this test match. (ANI)
