Sirmour, Dec 28 (ANI): Jaggery production in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmour District is providing employment to the hundreds of labourers from the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh.
Labourers said that they do not have much employment opportunities in Uttar Pradesh.
"In our state, we do not get employment daily. So, we have to come to Himachal and have to spend five months here working. We are unable to find employment in our state," said Mohan, a labourer.
Another labourer added that for five months, they migrate to Himachal Pradesh, to get employment in jaggery units for their livelihood.
"Our work continues for five months and jaggery is sold to nearby local villages and the left over jaggery is supplied to local ration shops and also sold to the locals for use in households," said Setpal, another labourer.
Due to the less availability of sugarcane for jaggery units, power cuts have also affected the jaggery production in Uttar Pradesh.
Sugarcane farming is done in 6500 hectares of land mainly in Sirmour, Kangra and Una districts. On an average, nearly 50,000 metric tonnes sugarcane is produced in the state. (ANI)
