London, Dec 25 (ANI): People living in Britain will face fines of up to 200 pounds a day during 2012 Olympics if they do not have permits to park their vehicles.
Huge "no-parking" zones are being thrown up around all Olympic venues during the upcoming sporting event.
Anyone living or working within a 30-minute walk of an event will need a parking permit. If they don't have one, they face the heavy parking fine during the 17-day event.
The permits will be free, but part of the cost of producing them and enforcement will be picked up by the taxpayer.
Fleets of "spy cars" will help catch offenders, the Daily Star reports.
The London Organising -Committee of the Games said that the measures would "protect residents" and "stop interlopers".
"The last thing we want is for -people not to be able to get out of their drive or not be able to take deliveries," said committee spokesman Adrian Bassett.
"We are working with all the local councils to protect those people that live there and work there so people aren't parking in front of someone's house and blocking them in."
According to insiders "up to two million" new permits will be -required. The method of applying won't be known until March.
A 30-minute walk from some venues could encompass a one-and-a-half mile radius. But the number of permits needed simply isn't known yet, said a source.
Meanwhile, motorists' campaigner Paul Pearson, raised question that "why should a million or two million people have the hassle of getting permits to park outside their own properties?"
He slated the decision in London to increase the standard 130 dollars fines to 200 dollars for the Games and warned, "it's to rake in extra revenue." (ANI)
