New Delhi, Dec.24 (ANI): The three-member Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday announced a seven-phase election for the state of Uttar Pradesh and a single phase election for the remaining four states of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa.
Addressing a news conference here this afternoon, Chief Election Commissioner S. Y. Quraishi and Election Commissioners V.S.Sampath and H.S.Brahma announced that elections in Uttar Pradesh would be held on February 4, 8,11,15, 19, 23 and 28. They said that it had been decided to hold the elections in seven phases, as the state had 403 assembly constituencies where polls are to be held.
They said elections in Uttarkhand's 70 assembly constituencies and in Punjab's 117 constituencies would be held on January 30, while elections for Manipur's 60 assembly constituencies would be held on January 28. Elections for 40 assembly constituencies in Goa would take place on March 3, 2012, the Election Commission said.
Counting of votes in the four states apart from Uttar Pradesh would also take place on March 4, 2012, the commission said.
Chief Election Commissioner Quraishi also announced that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into effect immediately, and added that for the polls, electronic voting machines would be placed in all polling booths and would be manned with strict security provided by both the central and state governments.
He also said that photo identification rolls in all five states have been completed to the satisfaction of the election commission. He said that Goa has completed 100 percent of photo identification rolls, while Punjab has completed 99.5 percent, Manipur (97.29 percent), Uttarkhand (99.6 percent) and Uttar Pradesh (98 percent).(ANI)
