Haridwar/Jalandhar, Dec 23 (ANI): Cold wave and dense fog continued to disrupted normal life across the various north Indian states due to a dip in mercury and low visibility forcing the residents to stay inside their houses.
Banks of the Holy River Ganges, famously known as 'Har ki Paudi', in religious city of Haridwar wore a deserted look on Friday due to intense fog and biting cold.he business of the small shopkeepers wore the brunt of the cold as there was decline in the number of devotees, who visited the holy city.
"Devotees are not able to reach Har ki Pauri because of the extreme cold and that is why Har ki Pauri is wearing a deserted look and I feel temperature will continue to fall down in the coming days," said Rakesh Sharma, a priest.
A similar situation was witnessed in the Jalandhar, Punjab where the locals had to fight their way out through the thick fog and train passengers were stranded at the railway stations for several hours.
A passenger, Sarabhjit Singh said that he was forced to take a leave from his office as his train failed to arrive on time.
"My train was scheduled to arrive at 2.45 am but now they are saying that it will come by 9.45 am. Train has not arrived yet and on its way. Whenever it will come I will board that train for Jammu. My whole day has been wasted as I could have reached early morning today. Since, now I will be reaching by 4pm in the evening, I will be marked absent in my office today," he said.
According to local media reports, around 150 trains are running behind the schedule and many were cancelled and rescheduled.
School children had to face a lot of problems due to the fog as they commute to their educational institution early in the morning.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, minimum temperature in most part of the northern India is likely to remain 2 to 3 degrees Celsius below normal, and the mercury would continue to dip. (ANI)
