London, Dec 17 (ANI): A British man keeps his electric artificial heart charged on long journeys by plugging it into the car's cigarette lighter.
Cable TV engineer Chris Marshall needs the regular boost as his fake ticker's batteries last just four hours.
"I must be one of the only people in Britain powered by their cigarette lighter," the Sun quoted 50-year-old Marshal as saying.
"If I drive to Cornwall it can be up to a three-hour round trip. So I plug into the cigarette lighter on the way for extra charge.
"It's OK as long as you don't need to swap it with the sat-nav," he said.
At night, Marshall plugs himself into the mains to stay alive.
"I plug in at every opportunity. If it fails in the night it will literally be 'goodnight'," he stated.
Marshall used to keep in shape with regular runs and gym sessions, but had a near-fatal heart attack in 2008.
Doctors found he had narrowing arteries, so he had a double heart by-pass and was also fitted with a mini defibrillator that regulated his heartbeat.
But last year his heart capacity plummeted and in July he was fitted with his left ventricular assist device.
Marshall hopes that he gets a replacement for his heart and wishes that he gets over this problem of charging artificial heart all the time.
"It's not a long-term fix and I'm still on the donor list awaiting a match. It will be nice to go to sleep and not have to worry about power cuts and flat batteries," he added. (ANI)
