New Delhi, Dec 16 (ANI): Reiterating the need for rural development in the country, veteran social activist Anna Hazare on Friday began his search for 100 hamlets with an aim to create 100 model villages across India.
Hazare and his aides left for a village in Haryana to hold discussions with the locals about the plan.
Ahead of his departure Hazare told the media in New Delhi that it was important to eradicate corruption, but added it was equally important to reform of villages for the development of the country.
"It is very important to develop model villages. It is both sides of the same coin. The country will only develop when villages are reformed and corruption is checked in the developed projects," said Hazare.
"We are leaving for a village and we will hold discussions with villagers. We are selecting some villages, we will see whether these villages are suitable or not," he added.
Hazare had earlier on Monday said that rural development and the movement against graft needed to go hand in hand if the country was to tread on the path of growth and development.
Hazare, who is fighting for a strong anti-graft bill, has been demanding that the lower bureaucracy should be brought within the ambit of the Lokpal besides provisions for Citizen's Charter and setting up of Lokayuktas under a central law.
The 74-year-old social activist has also warned the government that he would sit on an indefinite fast from December 27 at the Ramlila Maidan here if a strong Lokpal Bill is not passed in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
Hazare had earlier staged an indefinite hunger strike against graft that he gave up on August 28 when the government agreed to deliberate the issues raised by him and his forum vis-a-vis the passage and enactment of the Lokpal Bill, a suggestion that has received unprecedented nationwide backing.
