Badayun (Uttar Pradesh), Dec 13 (ANI): In an endeavour to garner support ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls to be held early next year, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday hit out at the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) saying his party will bring about a change and development in the state.
Gandhi, who began his five-day tour today as part of his campaign in Uttar Pradesh, while addressing a political rally here said: "In the past 20 years, what did you get? You trusted SP. What did you get back in return? You trusted BSP. What did you get? (You got) corruption. Now, we are talking about development, we are talking about the future."
"UP can change. This is not difficult. Take it from me in writing. In five years, we (Congress) can start changing this state and in the next ten years, people from outside will come here looking for jobs. People will then ask, what is happening in UP," he added.
Gandhi further slammed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, saying there was no dearth of money in the state, but it was not reaching to those in need.
"The money is not reaching you. Influential people do not feel the problems, but it is the poor who are suffering. The problem today is that the leaders do not come to the ground," he said.
According to reports, Gandhi will address 19 public meetings in seven districts during his five-day tour.
Gandhi, who is leaving no stone unturned in giving a tough fight to the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the forthcoming state assembly elections, has so far visited various parts of the state.
He has focused equally on the lower caste Dalits, Muslims, socially backward classes and marginalised Hindus during his visits to Uttar Pradesh.
The Uttar Pradesh elections, which are scheduled in the early part of 2012, is being seen as a stepping-stone for the Congress Party to establish a firm political base in India's fifth largest and most populous state before the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
