Imphal, Dec 13 (ANI): The 72nd Nupee Lal Day was observed to commemorate the uprising of Manipuri women against the British rulers in 1904 and 1939 in Imphal on Monday.
The state paid rich tributes to women freedom fighters, who took part in the first and second Nupee Lal (women's war) against the Britishers.
The day was celebrated by organising the 20th Nupee Lal women marathon that witnessed the participation of hundreds of women. The marathon had no age limit and stretched for a distance of three kilometers.
A cultural programme including plays performed by women, depicting the Nupee Lal uprisings followed the marathon.
For the residents, the Nupee Lal day was proud moment to honour the women freedom fighters who stood against the mighty British empire.
"I am so proud of our mothers, who in past, sometime in 1939, rose against the so-called British power so powerfully and so courageously against the British power, I am so proud to remember this thing," said W. Rajen singh, Director, education.
During the first Nupee Lal uprising, in 1904, Manipuri women rose against the British government's order to use men as 'forced labourers' for the construction of an assistant political agent's house in Imphal.
In the second uprising, on December 12, 1939, thousands of women marched to the state durbar hall demanding a ban on the export of rice as floods had caused extensive damage to crops that year. (ANI)
