New Delhi, Dec 11 (ANI): With Anna Hazare sitting on a day-long fast at the Jantar Mantar here to protest against the proposals of Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Lokpal Bill, former senior police officer and civil society activist Kiran Bedi today said the veteran social activist's protest fast will strengthen the roots of democracy in the country.
Stating that every Indian needs to have qualities like fearlessness and patriotism, Bedi said Hazare is an inspiration for the youth.
"Every Indian is lucky enough...who will see Anna (Anna Hazare), listen to him and feel him today. Everybody will learn many things from him like fearlessness, commitment, and patriotism. I feel that Anna is an inspiration for the youth and every one of us, because every Indian needs to have these qualities like fearlessness and patriotism," said Bedi.
"He is not doing anything for himself; he is doing this for the future of the country and for the youth of the country. He is raising the voice of the poor people in the country. So I feel that the protest-fast that we are doing at Jantar Mantar will strengthen the roots of our democracy," she added.
Bedi further said the leaders of all political parties were welcome to listen to the opinion of the public and express their views as well.
"We are proud to have such a democracy in this country, where the elected and the electorate, without adjournment, can meet outside the Parliament," she said.
Hazare, who is fighting for a strong anti-graft bill, has been demanding that the lower bureaucracy should be brought within the ambit of the Lokpal besides provisions for Citizen's Charter and setting up of Lokayuktas under a central law.
The 74-year-old social activist has also warned the government that he would sit on an indefinite fast from December 27 at the Ramlila Maidan here if a strong Lokpal Bill is not passed in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
The Lokpal Bill is seen as a weapon to root out corruption and nepotism from the government machinery and in public life.
The proposed Bill envisages the setting up of a national anti-corruption watchdog to check financial mismanagement and corrupt practices that have deeply pervaded several democratic and civic institutions of India.
Hazare had staged an indefinite hunger strike against graft that he gave up on August 28 when the government agreed to deliberate the issues raised by him and his forum vis-?-vis the passage and enactment of the Lokpal Bill, a suggestion that has received unprecedented nationwide backing. (ANI)
