Kolkata, Dec 10 (ANI): Lawyers of the Alipore Court have refused to defend the six arrested persons held responsible for the massive fire that broke out in the AMRI Hospital, killing 89 people on Friday.
Addressing mediapersons outside the Alipore Court, Vishva Bhushan Gupta, President of the Alipore Bar Council, blamed the owners of the hospital for the murder and for being insensitive towards the common man.
Gupta declared that no lawyer from the Alipore Court would fight the case of any of the accused who are arrested.
"Inspite of the fire brigade, who gave them a notice to clear all the garbage till 31st November, they did not do anything. They even don't care for the public. They are interested for the money, they are anti-social persons," said Gupta.
The fire is suspected to have started in the electrical department in the basement of the hospital at about 3.30am on Friday and quickly spread to the upper floors through the air-conditioning shafts.
Consequently, thick smoke engulfed the hospital and fire fighters smashed windows to evacuate people.
Fire fighters and rescue workers continued to take out bodies of patients who were choked to death after being trapped in the massive fire.
This was the second fire tragedy in AMRI Hospital after 2008, which was triggered by an electric short circuit. (ANI)
