Hughes gets another chance to retain spot in Oz squad for India Test series

Hobart, Fri, 09 Dec 2011 ANI

Hobart (Australia), Dec 9(ANI): Out-of-form Australian opening batsman Phil Hughes has been given another lifeline by national selectors to retain his place in the national squad for the upcoming four-Test series against India.

Hughes' position has almost become untenable after he failed to score yet again in the first innings of the second Test being played here against New Zealand.

The 23-year-old, however, has been named in a Cricket Australia (CA) Chairman's XI to take on India in Canberra from December 19-21.

Recovering Test batsman Shaun Marsh and fast bowler Doug Bollinger were also included in the squad to be captained by David Warner, Fox Sports reports.

Another CA Chairman's XI squad - captained by Tasmanian opener Ed Cowan - has been picked to play India in the national capital from December 15-16.

It is believed that Hughes' latest failure may see Cowan make his Test debut off the back of his three centuries and a half-century in his last four innings for the Tigers and Australia A.

The first Test of the series will start in Melbourne on December 26.

The remaining Tests will be played in Sydney, Perth and Adelaide. The Tests will be followed by two Twenty20 internationals, before Sri Lanka join in for a one-day tri-series from February 5.
