Bangalore, Dec 4 (ANI): Former Karnataka Minister B. Sriramulu won the Bellary (Rural) Assembly bypoll by more than 46000 votes.
The result of the bypoll has come as a huge setback to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka.
Sriramulu, who contested the bypoll as an independent after quitting the party, 74,527 votes.
The Joint Election Commissioner of Karnataka, R Manoj, announced the results before the media here.
"The results have been declared. Independent candidate B Sriramulu has been declared electorate from 93 Bellary assembly constituency. 74,527 votes. Margin is 46,790 over Congress candidate," said Manoj.
Congress candidate B Ramprasad came in second with 27,737 votes. BJP candidate P Gadilingappa came third securing just 17,366 votes.
Sriramulu had quit the BJP after a fall out when he was denied a ministerial berth due to his indictment in an illegal mining case.
More than 1,20,000 voters made use of their franchise during last month's poll. (ANI)
