London, Dec 1(ANI): The UK intelligence agency, Government Communication Headquarters (GCHQ), has launched a new code cracking competition to attract British talent.
The move comes after the British government announced plans to establish a specialist department within the GCHQ to tackle cyber threats.
According to the organization, applicants would be presented with a keyword to enter into a form field on successfully cracking the code, and redirected to the agency's recruitment website.
A spokesperson said the contest was aimed at raising the GCHQ's profile to a relatively inaccessible audience.
"The target audience for this particular campaign is one that may not typically be attracted to traditional advertising methods and may be unaware that GCHQ is recruiting for these kinds of roles," the spokesperson said.
"Their skills may be ideally suited to our work and yet they may not understand how they could apply them to a working environment, particularly one where they have the opportunity to contribute so much," he added.
The organisation said it was not worried that the code's answer might be leaked on the Internet because the consequent discussion would "generate future recruitment enquiries".
The GCHQ had earlier given hints about the competition after UK Prime Minister David Cameron said his government supported "initiatives such as the Cyber Security Challenge, which promotes careers in cyber security via annual competitions and events" in his response to the Intelligence and Security Committee's annual report.
The committee had pointed out the GCHQ's "inability to retain a suitable cadre of Internet specialists" to counter to cyber threats. (ANI)
