Melbourne, Nov 29 (ANI): Australian batsman Phil Hughes, who will be looking to cement his place during first Test against New Zealand in Brisbane, has backed new opening partner David Warner to excel in his debut match.
The unorthodox Hughes avoided the axe with a splendid 88 in Australia's dramatic two-wicket second Test win over South Africa in Johannesburg.
But injured opener Shane Watson's looming return ensures Hughes will again be on edge if another failure coincides with an impressive Test debut by Warner.
Both left-handed NSW batsmen are aggressive, but Hughes conceded he would take the back seat if Warner takes the driver seat against New Zealand at the Gabba.
"If he gets going I will try to give him as much strike as possible. He's an excitement machine. I am happy to watch him at the other end and watch him go - I will have the best seat in the house if that happens," The Herald Sun quoted Hughes, as saying.
Hughes is keen to finally end years of criticism and cement his Test spot in Brisbane.
"I have had it (criticism) for the last three years now, that's the way it goes. But I like to be different. At the end of the day it comes down to scoring runs.
"It is a huge excitement for me to play my first Test match in Brisbane and I have never started the summer (for Australia). I really want to nail down that position and make it mine," Hughes said. (ANI)
