New Delhi, Nov 29 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has endorsed the Bharatiya Janata Party's policy of opposing the Centre's decision to allow 51 percent foreign direct investment in multi-retail sector.
He tweeted: "My stand is the same as that of my party, BJP and which is in the interest of the nation."
Modi's tweet came on the heels of Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj checking with him about reports that his government had given a nod to FDI in the multi-brand retail trade.
She had sought Modi's clarification since Commerce Minister Anand Sharma had claimed at a press conference here on Friday that at least two BJP-ruled states of Gujarat and Karnataka, as also the coalition government of BJP and Akali Dal in Punjab had endorsed the FDI proposal during the Centre Government's consultations with states.
Modi was quoted telling Swaraj that a Gujarat government official had opposed the move in writing when the Centre had solicited views on bringing FDI into retail trade.
The Congress, however, browbeated the BJP, saying that in its 2004 poll manifesto, it had committed to initiate 26 per cent FDI in retail trade if re-elected to power.
Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi asked: "Why this about-turn and blockage of Parliament on the BJP initiative that the government is now implementing?" (ANI)
