U.S. Govt cracks down on 150 websites for selling counterfeit goods

Washington , Tue, 29 Nov 2011 ANI

Washington, Nov 29(ANI): The U.S. Government has cracked down on 150 websites for selling counterfeit goods.

A joint operation by the Department of Justice (DoJ), Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations group and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Washington field office was carried out in this regard.

The measure is a part of an initiative, Operation In Our Sites, aimed at tackling online piracy.

"For most, the holidays represent a season of good will and giving, but for these criminals, it's the season to lure in unsuspecting holiday shoppers," Fox News quoted ICE Director John Morton, as saying.

"More and more Americans are doing their holiday shopping online, and they may not realize that purchasing counterfeit goods results in American jobs lost, American business profits stolen and American consumers receiving substandard products," Morton added.

A banner has been posted on defaulter websites, informing visitors about the measure and making them aware that infringement of copyright is a punishable offence.

The DoJ, however, did not disclose the list of defaulters.

The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR Center) has seized 350 websites, out of which 116 are forfeited to the government since the beginning of the operation in 2010. (ANI)
