Wycleaf Jean defends charity against 'wasted millions' claim

London , Tue, 29 Nov 2011 ANI

London, November 29 (ANI): Wycleaf Jean has defended his personal charity, Yele Haiti, against media reports of misspending of funds.

A New York Post report had said less than a third of the available funds went to emergency efforts, and 1 million dollar was paid to a Florida firm called Amisphere Farm Labor, that doesn't seem to exist.

Yele Haiti also gave out contracts worth 353,983 dollars to a firm owned by the brother of Jean's wife Claudinette.

The hip-hop singer called the allegations "misleading, deceptive, and incomplete."

He insisted that the companies carried out legitimate work and that he 'stood by' the payments made to them, saying that they were made at a 'chaotic' time when lives depended on speedy disaster response.

The percentage of funds so far used for aid work by Yele Haiti was 'consistent with NGOs and Not For Profits operating in Haiti at the time', the Independent quoted him as saying.

After the January 2010 earthquake, in which 200,000 Haitians died, Jean had used Twitter to appeal for 5-dollar donations, raising millions of dollars.

But he soon issued a tearful apology, via YouTube, for the way that money was being spent. (ANI)
