New Delhi, Nov. 21 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today announced a compensation of rupees two lakh for the next of kin of the eunuchs, who were killed in a major fire that broke out at a community function of transgender congregation here on Sunday evening.
"At the moment, their treatment is being done free of cost and whatever assistance is required for the medicines, it will be provided to them. Apart from that, since they have received burn injuries and the belongings of most of them have also been burnt, our Deputy Commissioner will immediately grant rupees five thousands to them to compensate for whatever belongings they have lost including the clothes," Dikshit told mediapersons on the sidelines of her visit to meet the injured at the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital here.
"Other compensation will be granted after verification. We will give rupees 50,00 for those who are seriously injured, rupees 5,000 for those who sustained minor injuries and rupees two lakh for the next of kin of those killed, after verification," she added.
Delhi Health Minister A.K. Walia confirming the death toll said that a total of 13 eunuchs were confirmed dead.
"In GTB Hospital, 12 dead bodies were brought, one body was taken to LNJP (Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital). So, the figure of the total dead persons is 13 and here (GTB) 33 are admitted and two are admitted in LNJP. So, a total of 35 injured persons are admitted," he said.
Walia further said that a few of the injured are in critical condition, while those with minor injuries are being discharged after being given the preliminary first aid.
Meanwhile, the relatives of the victims raised anti-government slogans and said that the incident occurred due to the negligence on the part of the authorities.
The eunuchs complained that they had lost all their belongings in the mishap.
"Whatever belongings that we had including money and jewellery, everything has been stolen. If it would have been burnt then it would be lying there, but nothing left is there," said Bubli, a transgender, who had come to attend the transgender convention from Allahabad.
Around 1000 eunuchs from across the country had gathered for a festival of their clan at the community hall in Nand Nagri in New Delhi. The participants were dancing and enjoying the evening when the fire took place.
It is suspected that the fire broke out due to a short circuit. (ANI)
