Fulbari (West Bengal), Nov. 17 (ANI): In a bid to enhance bilateral trade, India and Bangladesh have opened the Banglabandha-Fulbari Land Port, which in turn has created new employment opportunities for locals residing in West Bengal.
The land route was earlier accessible only by Bhutan and Nepal, but not for India consequently leading to shortage of jobs.
Praising the initiative, the local residents here said the opening of the trade route meant they no longer had to migrate to other areas in search of work.
"Earlier, there was no work available here. So, in order to find jobs, we used to go to Siliguri and other areas near there. Now, it's like I'm working on my doorstep as I live in this area. Its good that I got work here," said Sudev Roy, a local resident.
The General Secretary of Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of North-Bengal (FOCIN), Biswajit Das, said that the trade route was opened at the start of this year.
"In the year 2004, a notification was given allowing Indian exporters to use this route to export their products to Bangladesh. After the notification in 2004, this trade route was opened for Indian exporters in the month of January in 2011," said Das.
The trade route is expected to expand in the future providing a further boost to employment opportunities in the area.
India's trade ties with Bangladesh is seen as crucial in a bid to reduce the economic and political isolation of the country's eastern and north eastern states. (ANI)
