Cummins not aiming to bowl fast at the expense of accuracy

Johannesburg, Wed, 16 Nov 2011 ANI

Johannesburg, Nov 16(ANI): Australian fast bowler Patrick Cummins says that bowling fast would not be his main aim if he is selected for the second and final Test against South Africa, which starts tomorrow in Johannesburg.

"I guess if speed comes at the price of losing accuracy I don't think I'd want to bowl extra pace. But I think it's something I have to see what happens. Hopefully I do, but I've got no idea whether strength work or fitness is going to get me any faster," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Cummins, as saying.

"I guess (speed being your aim) depends what your role is in the team and in the game. In four day and five day cricket it's harder to maintain the speeds all day and sometimes you can go at the price of plenty of runs."

"So, it's all about doing your job and if you're in a spell with someone down the other end who is keeping it tight you might have the ability to try and rip in and try and start intimidating the batting," he added.

Cummins was granted a Cricket Australia contract in June, and in October, he played two Twenty20 matches for Australia against South Africa.

On the basis of his performances in these games (he took 3/25 and 2/26), the 18-year-old was selected in the Test squad, in what was said to be a "meteoric rise". (ANI)
