Kolkata, Nov. 13 (ANI): Scores of residents came together to take part in a walkathon that was organised here on Sunday on the eve of World Diabetes Day.
The walkathon is an annual exercise organised on the occasion of World Diabetes Day to raise awareness about the disease among the common people.
The walkathon, which was held here fort the third consecutive year in a row, witnessed the participation by a large numbers of people.
The walkathon is held under the aegis of the events company named EMG Events who apart from organising walkathons, also light up heritage monuments in the city.
"Tomorrow is World Diabetes Day and today we are celebrating the third episode of Kolkata Walkathon. Kolkata Walkathon is held every year on the occasion of World Diabetes Day every year to spread awareness about the killer disease and to encourage people to have a healthier and fitter lifestyle," said Krishnendu Banik, the country head of EMG Events.
"November 14 is United Nation's designated World Diabetes Day. You have World Diabetes Day celebrations in the major cities of the world. In Kolkata, EMG Events organises through lighting of heritage buildings, road shows and signages, free health checkup of senior citizens and most importantly, the Kolkata Walkathon," he added.
The World Diabetes Day is observed every year on November 14 to mark awareness against diabetes, which is a major number of patients worldwide.
World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that more than 346 million people worldwide have diabetes. This number is likely to more than double by 2030 without intervention. (ANI)
