Hazare's anti-graft movement showing political hues: Prithviraj Chavan

Pune, Tue, 08 Nov 2011 ANI

Pune, Nov 8 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan regards the anti-graft movement of social activist Anna Hazare to be having a political agenda.

"The anti-Congress campaign by Anna and his aides in Hisar prior to the by-polls was political and not right. The central government had already assured that it would pass the Lokpal Bill in the winter session and a time frame also had been given as such it was unwise on the part of Hazare to indulge in such a campaign," Chavan told the media here.

He said Hazare should wait before protesting again.

Chavan had earlier said that someone was guiding Anna Hazare towards political ambitions, and this was something he had not seen Hazare do it earlier.

The Jan Lokpal Bill is seen as a weapon to root out corruption and nepotism from the government machinery and in public life.

The proposed Bill envisages the setting up of a national anti-corruption watchdog to check financial mismanagement and corrupt practices that have deeply pervaded several democratic and civic institutions of India.

The 74-year-old social activist had staged an indefinite hunger strike against graft that he gave up on the 13th day on August 28 when the government agreed to deliberate the issues raised by him and his forum vis-?-vis the passage and enactment of the Lokpal Bill, a suggestion that has received unprecedented nationwide backing.

He even questioned the ruling government's intention to ensure a corruption-free India, as it had failed to introduce an effective ant-graft bill to combat corruption so far.

Hazare had earlier said that he would fast again, ahead of the assembly polls that would take place in Uttar Pradesh next year, in case the Congress failed to approve his version of the anti-graft bill. (ANI)
