Swedish lingerie shop under fire for making staff wear tags with bra size

Stockholm, Thu, 03 Nov 2011 ANI

Stockholm Nov.3 (ANI): A lingerie shop in Sweden, which has mandated its staff to wear tags revealing their bust circumference and cup sizes, has come under fire from some employees.

After failed negotiations with the Swedish branch of the Scandinavian lingerie chain, Change, to amend the policy, the Commercial Employees' Union is now planning to sue the company, the Local reported.he company first introduced the tags three years ago.

A former employee asserted that she was first told about the tags on her first day of working with an objective of displaying the broad range of sizes of bra available in the shop.

"I thought it seemed really weird, but I wanted the job as well," she told Sveriges Radio (SR).

According to union paper Handelsnytt, the CEO of the company, Susann Haglund had denied the allegations in January and claimed that the employees had suggested for the tags themselves.

Haglund said that the employees are meant to assist the customers in their choice by showing them what size might be right for what body shape.

However, workers said they were told the tags were mandatory and they are issued demerits if they are not wearing them with all information visible when shoppers come into the store.

"When you start you get receive a document which states that 'name tag with size is always worn'," the former employee told SR.

"So to me that doesn't reflect that it was voluntary. It isn't great when you're out on town and people greet you with your name and cup size. It feels sort of private."

After working with the company for one and a half years, she decided to raise a voice against this demeaning act and contacted the Commercial Employees' Union.

The union has maintained that the tags clearly signify discrimination and their use breaks the union's collective agreement, and could be in breach of Swedish law. (ANI)
