Anantnag, Nov 1 (ANI): Residents of Anantnag in South Kashmir have praised the state government and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for constructing new roads and widening those that already exist.
Construction work is in full swing, as roads are being widened from Anantnag to the Sinthan Pass.
"We are very happy. They are making a wide road because if there is a proper road, tourists will come. We will benefit from this move. When the road is narrow, it becomes very difficult for vehicles to ply," said Gulam Hassan Malik, a resident.
"When there is snowfall, it becomes even more difficult for vehicles to move. It is a task for a single car to move on the road, so how can two vehicles ply?" he added.
Sinthan Top is approximately 75 kilometres from Anantnag district. The expansion of the road from Anantnag to Kishtwar has been done to ensure smooth travel for Kashmir Valley residents.
This project encompasses a length of 155 kilometres and BEACON (a project of the BRO) officials have already completed 80 percent of this project.
After the completion of the project, residents as well as tourists would be able to ply easily through this route in a cost-effective manner.
"To complete 56 kilometres, we received help from DC Anantnag and other officials. Due to their supportive behaviour, we could acquire the land on time and we have been successful in constructing this road. We still have to complete 16 kilometres, that area is called Hiller. We still have to construct a road from Hiller to Anantnag. This project has to be completed by 2013 and we will try our best to complete this project within the stipulated time," said Kishan Kumar, Executive Engineer, BEACON.
Though media reports had suggested that this project was shelved, work on this road has put an end to all speculations.
The BRO had been working on the road for several years, but the construction was stalled as five personnel had been killed by unidentified gunmen at Sinthan.
Officials have promised that the work would be completed within the allotted time frame, which is 2013. (ANI)
