Demand for dry fruits on rise after reports of spurious sweet

Jaipur, Tue, 25 Oct 2011 ANI

Jaipur, Oct 25 (ANI): Ahead of the festival of lights Diwali people in Rajasthan are preferring to buy dry fruits as against sweetmeats following reports of adulterated sweets.

Every year during the festive season, various cases of adulterated and artificial sweets are reported as the traders often use below standard products to earn higher profits.

"In the last 3-4 years, there has been a pattern of adulteration in sweets. There are synthetic sweets. We are hearing news from many places, so people now know that the quality of sweets is not good and that is why they are switching over to dry fruits," said Surinder Singh, a customer.

Demand for the dry fruits has surged in the last few days with people opting for the former instead of the customary gifts of sweetmeats to family and friends.

"The demand for dry fruits has risen by about 30-40 percent. As there are many cases of spurious sweets, and there is no durability in sweets," said Mukesh Gupta, a shop owner.

Recent raids conducted in several sweets' shops in various parts of northern ndia has raised concern about its quality during this festive season.

People said that they do not want to undertake any risks by buying adulterated sweets that could have an adverse impact on their health. (ANI)
