Amnesty slams London Olympics chief over 'Blood of Bhopal' Dow's sponsorship for event

London, Sun, 23 Oct 2011 ANI

London, Oct 23 (ANI): Human Rights organization Amnesty International has slammed London Olympics organizers' decision to name controversial Dow Chemical Company, which is responsible for Bhopal gas tragedy, as a sponsor of the 2012 stadium in London.

The organization has written to tell Lord Coe of its "serious concern" over a deal to let Dow Chemical sponsor the seven million pounds fabric curtain that will encircle the Olympic Stadium during next summer's Games.

The campaign group told the 2012 Games chief that awarding Dow marketing rights had shocked survivors of environmental disasters in Bhopal, Express.co.uk reports.

Amnesty boss Seema Joshi said Dow had failed "to address one of the worst corporate related human rights disasters of the 20th century".

The move had earlier outraged campaigners fighting for 25,000 people who died in India's devastating chemical leak in 1984.

Victims' campaigners have argued that children in the city are still being born maimed because of poisons that continue to pollute the city's groundwater. (ANI)
