London, Oct 21 (ANI): A survey has revealed that girls are outperforming boys even before starting up with their formal education, in areas such as writing and counting.
UK Government figures suggest that almost one in five boys aged five cannot write their own names as compared to one in ten girls.
Some 19 per cent of boys cannot write their own name, or short words like 'dog' or 'cat'.
And two fifths of boys cannot write a simple shopping list, or a letter to Santa, compared with a fifth of their female counterparts.
Furthermore, almost one in 10 boys cannot count up to 10, compared with six per cent of girls.
The statistics, published by the Department for Education for 2011, show the number of five-year-olds who are achieving specific early learning 'goals', including social skills, literacy and numeracy and emotional development.
"It's encouraging to see a small improvement from last year," the Daily Mail quoted Children's Minister Sarah Teather as saying.
"However, it is not good enough that more than two out of five children start school without the solid foundation they need to succeed and that boys continue to lag behind girls," she added. (ANI)
