Farooq Abdullah expresses concern over diminishing resources of energy

New Delhi, Oct 20 (ANI): Highlighting the importance of energy in our day to day life, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah today expressed his concern over the diminishing resources of energy.

Addressing the 'ninth edition of Green Building Congress 2011' here, Abdullah said that 40 percent of Indian population still depends upon primitive means of energy sources.

"India is short of energy and therefore for us energy is vitally important. If you want to progress and really come up to a country which is going to be standing on its own feet, energy is important and therefore even after 60 years of independence, 40 percent of our population does not know what an electric bulb looks like. They still burn wood in their homes, they still burn either kerosene or diesel whatever they can get," said Abdullah.

Abdullah further said that now the government is taking initiative to provide energy by making use of renewable sources.

"It is a great thing now that we have been able to start in a very big way in providing energy from renewable sources but that is also not cheap. We have to bring the price of some of these products down and the only way it can be brought down by producing much more," added Abdullah.

Abdullah also insisted on more research to produce new energy and at the same time pitched for import of technology and then developing it on our own.

"Our needs are far different from that of others. We have done very well in wind energy we have produced 17,000 MW and we plan to add 2,000 MW every year," he said.

He further said that the showcase Delhi-Mumbai industrial corridor will be completely green and towns on the stretch would be environment-friendly.

"Well, we are all promoting green buildings, government of India has already taken the task of making all government buildings a three star and above three star energy efficient building. And we hope that every other state will also do. And now when you see this corridor coming up between Delhi and Mumbai, the all the towns that will come up on that link will be entirely green, the energy will be green, they will be entirely environment friendly," said Abdullah.
