Ponting eyeing big scores against South Africa

Sydney, Thu, 20 Oct 2011 ANI

Sydney, Oct 20 (ANI): Former skipper Ricky Ponting is eyeing big scores after his man-of-the match performance in the first ODI against South Africa.

Converted to an opener, Ponting (63 from 77 balls) combined for a brilliant 102-run partnership with Michael Clarke (44 from 48) in the rain-affected 93-run win at the Centurion.

Clarke had made the bold pre-match prediction that Ponting would finish the tour as man-of-the-series in the ODIs and a leading run scorer in the Tests.

"He's a good judge then isn't he. It wasn't one of my best innings today ... but it was good to get some time in the middle. Hopefully that's the start of a big tour for me," said Ponting.

Thunderstorms stopped play for more than four and a half hours and the match was reduced to 29 overs each under the Duckworth-Lewis system.

Australia's total of 4-183 was readjusted and left South Africa with the daunting task of having to post 223 for victory.

The Proteas crumbled in the face of Australia's all-round performance with the ball and were all out for 129 in the 22nd over. (ANI)
