Sydney, Oct 18 (ANI): Australia's teenage pace sensation Pat Cummins is ready to handle the pressure put upon him to be the future leader of his team's bowling attack.
Cummins' was named in the Australian Test squad for the two-match series against South Africa.
The 18-year-old New South Welshman said he is initially focusing solely on seizing any chance presented to him during the one-day series, which begins in Centurion on Wednesday.
Senior squad members praised the speedster as an outstanding prospect during the drawn two-game Twenty20 series, which he finished with five wickets at an economy rate of less than seven, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Chief selector Andrew Hilditch admitted that the panel is hoping he'll become the next superstar of Australian cricket after fast-tracking him into the Test squad where he could become the second-youngest Australian Test debutant in history.
Cummins agrees such accolades bring some pressure, and added that he has grown in self-belief from the faith shown in his ability.
"It does put a little bit of added pressure on trying to live up to those comments but it has helped. I guess it's almost given me more confidence in that I've got the backing of fellow players and obviously past players as well," said Cummins.
Concers are being raised in Australia that Cummins is being pushed too far too early, having already battled with back trouble in his debut season with NSW. (ANI)
