Sir Cliff Richard in death pact with sister if they develop dementia

London , Sun, 16 Oct 2011 ANI

London, Oct 16 (ANI): Singing legend Sir Cliff Richard has revealed that he has made a death pact with one of his sisters if they develop dementia as their beloved mother did.

Richard, 70, has revealed that he and his sister have agreed to save themselves from the same prolonged misery by ending their lives early after seeing mother Dorothy battle Alzheimer's for more than a decade until she died at the age of 87 in 2007.

He has three sisters Donna, 68, Jacqui, 63, and Joan, 61, but did not say with whom he has made the pact.

"It was a gradual change and it steamrollered. In the last four years she didn't know who I was. If she referred to me, she would call me 'that Cliff Richard' " the Daily Express quoted him as saying of his mother's battle with Alzheimer's.

"I said to my sister, 'When mum dies it won't be bad because we have already mourned the loss of a mother.' She stopped being the woman we knew. It doesn't haunt me but I have discussed it with my sister and I said, 'If this happens to me, don't let it go on too long - and make sure I am looked after, as I don't want to be a burden on anybody else," he said.

"I may live to be 100. It may happen at 90. They may well allow euthanasia or something like that. The terrible thing is that dementia doesn't take your life but it removes it away from you - you don't have a life," he added. (ANI)
