2012 London Olympics boycott fear over Dow Chemical Company sponsorship deal

London , Sun, 16 Oct 2011 ANI

London, Oct 16(ANI): The 2012 London Olympics bosses have reportedly held crisis talks over a possible boycott of the event following a sponsorship deal with a firm linked to the 1984 Bhopal gas leak disaster.

Sources have told the Daily Express that a "mistake" was made when Dow Chemical Company was awarded the a seven million pound deal which gives them "exclusive marketing rights" for the main stadium in east London.

"We're trying to find a solution, but I don't think it's going to happen. We've made a mistake, that's accepted now, but we're desperately hoping this doesn't blow up into something bigger. It would be a disaster if it did," the source said.

The deal will allow Dow's logo to be pictured in all photographs leading up to the Games.

The Games chiefs are now worried that they have insulted India as Dow owns Union Carbide Corporation, which was responsible for the Bhopal disaster.

The Indian government is in the middle of a billion dollar legal action against Dow, with another hearing for increased compensation expected in weeks at the Supreme Court in New Delhi. (ANI)
