Dhaka, Oct 12 (ANI): Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has unveiled the nation's first domestically made laptop named 'Doel'.
The state-owned telecom company Telephone Shilpa Sangstha (TSS) has produced four models of the laptop.
The most basic model that runs the android operating system is priced at 10,000 taka (130 dollars), and is the cheapest laptop in the world.
TSS managing director Mohammad Ismail said that the new laptop would bring lots of benefits to the nation.
"This is a big step towards building a digital Bangladesh. When villages get laptops at a cheaper price they will be connected to the internet and that will bring lots of benefits," the BBC quoted Ismail, as saying.
Sheikh Hasina also said during the inauguration that, "every part of the country would be brought under e-governance, while the telecommunication system is being modernised to cut the digital divide".
Ismail said that Bangladesh is currently producing 10 percent of the components for the laptops and the rest are imported, adding that within six months they would be able to produce 60 percent of the components.
The laptops will initially be distributed to various government departments, and later on they will be made available to the public and to tens of millions of students. (ANI)
