Favourable weather conditions boosting walnut production in Kashmir

Srinagar, Oct 11 (ANI): Walnut producers of Jammu and Kashmir are satisfied with favourable weather conditions, as it has helped in ensuring a good yield.

 

Cultivators have expressed happiness as the production of walnut has doubled in comparison to last year.

 

"This year, there has been an increase in the production of walnuts as compared to last year. The climate has played an important role and is duly responsible for it. The production has increased. The quality has been maintained and production has also increased as compared to last year's production due to harvesting," said Manzoor Ahmad, a technical officer, attached with the state horticulture department.

 

Kashmir walnuts are widely known for their superior quality and taste, these walnuts have always been in great demand in the regional markets.

 

"This year, by God's grace, the production has increased as compared to last year due to favourable weather conditions," said Abdul Rasheed, a grower.

 

The walnuts are a big hit with tourists who visit Kashmir region, as they carry large quantities of these walnuts back home.

 

These days the walnuts are extensively used to make snacks and confectionery.

 

In addition, the Horticulture Department of Jammu and Kashmir Government has introduced hi-tech green house technology along with high yielding dwarf varieties, in a bid to double the state's walnut production.

 

The introduction of new high yielding varieties has generated hope among the farmers, as thousands of people are associated with the walnut trade in the state.(ANI)
