London, Oct 9 (ANI): A British pensioner has become the first person to circumnavigate the Arctic Circle by boat clockwise, and the first Brit to make the journey in either direction.
Jeffrey Allison, 73, who started sailing only after his retirement, embarked on the record-breaking voyage in June from Hartlepool and was accompanied by Australian crewmate Katherine Brownlie, 28.
He sailed through Iceland, Greenland, around Alaska, Russia and Scandinavia in his 52 feet craft and the depleting level of ice in Artic Circle made this voyage a success.
The expedition was certainly not his first attempt. Earlier, the Russian coastguards almost caught him for sailing over the Barents Sea without permission in 2009.
"He just said he'd deal with it if he got in trouble again. The whole family is so proud," the Mirror quoted his daughter Fiona Cook as saying.
Allison is currently is on his way home to Middleton Tyas, North Yorks. (ANI)
