Washington, Oct 9 (ANI): It is believed that hook-ups are a pathway to a lot of college relationships.
Now, a new study has found that college students aren't very judgmental of women who "hook up" with guys, but dating can be a minefield.
Casual sex in college - known colloquially as "hooking up" - gets a lot of attention for supposedly being unhealthy for women.
But the study found that hooking up may actually allow women more sexual agency than traditional dinner dates.
The researchers don't advocate a world without dates, but they do find that college students often harbour a sexual double standard- the idea that promiscuous guys are "studs," while women who have sex are "sluts" -around dates that is relatively relaxed when it comes to in-the-moment hook-ups.
In hook-up scenarios, the study found, students are open to a woman taking the sexual lead.
That's not to say that hook-ups are a paradise for women, said study researcher Sinikka Elliott, a sociologist at North Carolina State University. It's just that dating might not be the refuge that it's made out to be.
"Other hook-up literature hasn't often looked at dates but suggests dating is better for women. These findings suggest a more complicated picture," Elliott told LiveScience.
The results appear in the October 2011 issue of the journal Gender and Society. (ANI)
