Kanpur, Oct 6 (ANI): Even as the demon king Ravana is vilified and his effigies are burnt in most parts of the country on the occasion of Dussehra, the people in Kanpur worship and glorify him to honour his intelligence and valour.
"This is the oldest temple of Dashanan (Ravana) and this is the only temple of Dashanan in India. Ravana, who was known for his intelligence and valour, is prayed and all the locals offer special prayers in front of Dashanan. The doors of the temple are opened for just one day on the occasion of Dussehra. At night, when the effigy of Dashanan would be burnt, then we would close the doors of the temple. We celebrate this festival of Dashanan with lots of fervour and enthusiasm," said Krishna Kumar, a devotee.
The doors of the Dashanan Temple in the town are opened once a year on the day of Dussehra.
Apart from Ravana, the gigantic effigies of his brother Kumbhakarna and son Meghnath are also burnt every year to conclude the Navratri festival.
In the months of Ashwin and Kartik, Hindus observe a 10-day ceremony of fast, rituals, celebrations and feasts to honor the Mother Goddess and the triumph of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana.
Dussehra also symbolizes the triumph of the warrior Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. (ANI)
