Srinagar, Oct 6 (ANI): Former National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut Mary Ellen Weber has shared and discussed her first encounter in space with curious and aspiring students in Srinagar he two-time NASA astronaut Weber said: "The students asked incredible questions, they have a great deal of insight, they obviously are very bright and have worked very hard and they are very confident.
So, I was very impressed with the questions. But, the question about whether or not they can be an astronaut. If I can be an astronaut, I guarantee you anybody can be an astronaut and every one of them has a chance to be an astronaut."
Students did not hesitate and grabbed the opportunity to be enlightened by an astronaut who stood before them.
"This was a very good experience. She (Weber) told us how she struggled to become an astronaut in NASA and what all she faced to reach at this level. We have got a very great inspiration through this because she came all the way from US to give us a lecture and she made the effort to come here for a very small event to Kashmir where today no one even looks at," said Faika Bhat, a student.
Many other students were all ears when Weber began describing her first journey to the space.
Videos of Weber's life in the space shuttle were shown to the people who were present at the event.
"You can learn a lot in books, you can learn a lot in classrooms but there is no comparison to getting to talk to scientists and people who have been there and done it in person and I think our intention was to bring somebody out here, they would be able to share the first hand experience of being in space and of learning. All the students here learn science and this is a great opportunity," said Usman Ahmad, Director of Mercy Corps (a U.S. based non-profit organisation).
Students also said that they would like to see more such people to visit them and enlighten them with their skills and knowledge.
Weber went to the space in 1992 and later in 2000. Her 10-year long career with one of the foremost space agency in the world came to an end after she retired in 2002. (ANI)
