New Delhi, Oct.1 (ANI): The Health Department of the Delhi Government today organised Special Health Camps in 24 of its hospitals to celebrate International Day of older persons.
A large number of senior citizens turned up for check up and treatment. The services of a few specialties were also available in this camp.
A large number of senior citizens were handed over spectacle and hearing aids for free by Delhi Health Minister Dr. Ashok Kumar Walia and East Delhi Member of Parliament Sandeep Dikshit.
The function was organised at Hedgawar Hospital where Delhi Assembly member Naseeb Singh and Director Health Services Dr. N.V. Kamath were also present. rincipal. Secretary (Health) Anshu Prakash gave the welcome address.
Dr. Walia stated that International Day of older persons is an occasion to acknowledge contribution, dignity and needs of senior citizens.
Due to availability of quality health services across Delhi during last decade average age has gone up substantially.
The population of persons over the age of 60 years has tripled in last five decades in India. In Delhi there were about 8 lakh senior citizen during 2001 which have increased to 14 lakh as of now.
Parliamentarian Sandeep Dikshit stressed upon the need of optimum utilization of health infrastructure. He also referred to the difficulties being faced by EWS families in getting free treatment in private hospitals.
Dikshit appreciated the efforts of the city government in expanding health infrastructure in Delhi.
He suggested that local dispensaries should be upgraded to overcome congestion in major hospitals. There is a also need to provide more care to each and every patients.
Delhi Assembly member Naseeb Singh also addressed the gathering. (ANI)
