Kolkata, Oct 1 (ANI): Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Raman Srivastava has said that the paramilitary outfit guarding the country's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh only fires in self-defence while tackling infiltration and smugglers.
Briefing mediapersons about the latest developments along the India-Bangladesh border here on Friday, Srivastava said: "The objective of this directive to the troopers was to achieve zero fatal targets, particularly of Bangladeshi nationals near border areas.
Meanwhile, Special Director General (East) BSF, V N Rai, said the usage of non-lethal weapons by troopers, has been a major success.
"This was a major thing that engaged the attention of political masters as well as the leadership of BSF and a very important change was brought out under the leadership of Mr. Raman Srivastava and that change was that BSF introduced non-lethal weapons at the border to tackle the smugglers, which has made our operations even more effective than before; I would say that within the ambits of law," added Rai.
He further he said that BSF and Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) would focus on 'coordinated patrolling' along the 4096 kilometres long border to curb infiltration and assorted illegal activities.
Srivastava and Rai had led a 21-member high-level team for the bi-annual Border Coordination Conference with the BGB that was held at Dhaka between September 25 and 30. (ANI)
