Imphal, Sep 30 (ANI)): A large number of school students of Heirok village in Manipur recently took out a mass protest rally demanding an end to the ongoing economic blockade in the state.
These students should have been in the school but the worsening socio economic situation due to the ongoing blockade has forced them out on the streets.
They want the twin blockades imposed by Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) and United Naga Council to end as it is affecting their studies, family incomes and the overall development of the state.
Teachers and staff members of Heirok Higher Secondary School also accompanied the students in the rally.
"Due to SHDDC blockade, the prices of all the commodities have gone up and our parents are facing problems. We are studying without getting enough food and it is not at all easy. We appeal to the agitators to end the blockade," said Laishram Rojen Singh, a student.
"Local people are the victims of this economic blockade. They are facing many problems and we do not get food and neither do we have any source of income," said Biren Singh.
The Sadar Hills District Demand Committee imposed the economic blockade in Manipur on August 1.
It is pressing the state to give Sadar Hills the status of a full-fledged district and is demanding its removal from the purview of Senapati district.
The blockade has resulted in shortage of fuel, food and other essential commodities. Petrol costs Rs 150 per litre and a gas cylinder costs Rs 1500. (ANI)
